The Fiat Group may have its share of problems, especially in Europe, yet CEO Sergio Marchionne recently announced that its second most prestigious brand, Maserati, will soon launch no less than three new models.

“Maserati will increase its volumes by having three cars”, said Marchionne after the CBI conference in London last week. According to British publication Car Magazine, Marchionne said that these would be the Kubang SUV, the Quattroporte replacement and a smaller four-door sedanthat will compete in the E-segment against the likes of the Jaguar XF and BMW 5-Series.

Fiat Abarth 500 Takes on Subaru Impreza WRX STI on Italian Track [Video]

The Abarth 500, especially when fitted with the 'essesse' performance package that lifts the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine's output to 160-horses, is a capable little beast for its size and price, but is that enough to challenge a previous generation Subaru Impreza WRX STI on the racetrack?

Well, as any driver with some experience on the circuit will tell you, it’s as much about the car as it is about the person sitting behind the wheel. That said, the Abarth 500 shouldn't come close to an STI in the right hands but it's plausible under certain circumstances.

Artists Tweet that J.Lo's Promotion of the Fiat 500 During the American Music Awards was "Shameless"

Jennifer Lopez has appeared in most of the TV spots regarding the Fiat 500. And that's not all as the 42-year old singer, actress, record producer, dancer, television persona, and fashion designer brought along the Italian city car to the stage during her recent performance at the American Music Awards.

The move, however, came under some heavy criticism. Lopez was attacked on Twitter with messages like “I know I just didn’t see that damb Fiat. I KNOW I didn’t see that friggin’ FIAT” from Roots drummer, Questlove. Singer and award presenter, John Legend, tweeted “that had to be the most shameless thing I’ve ever seen in a performance. I was genuinely shocked.”

Ferrari Designer Called Upon by Fiat to Create a Common Styling for Chrysler and Lancia

Platform sharing is nothing new in the automotive world. Everyone does it as it enables companies to reduce development costs across the board. For example, if it weren’t for the VW Touareg, Porsche probably wouldn’t have the means to develop the model that effectively made it a cash cow: the Cayenne.

And truth to be said, most of the times, your average buyer doesn't know what's hiding under the sheetmetal nor if the vehicle in question is identical in many ways to a model bearing a different badge, because what he or she sees and feels are indeed different.

The trouble starts when carmakers engage in blatant badge engineering, simply placing a different grille and a new logo on the steering wheel and calling it something else.

And that's where the problem lies for Fiat and Chrysler. The automotive alliance recently revealed a trio of Lancia models in Europe: the Thema sedan, Flavia Cabrio and the Voyager MPV, which are nothing more than rebadged versions of the Chrysler 300, 200 Convertible and Town & Country respectively.

Not that we mind one bit, but remember the scorching hot brunette starring in Fiat's 500 Abarth commercial? Whom are we kidding, of course you do.

Well as one of our commentators, Vlad Ewan, pointed out, even though Fiat's ad would like us to believe that she is Italian, the bodacious, long-legged model is in fact Romanian and her name for those of you familiar with "Google Image Search" is Catrinel Menghia.

But then again, isn't that the case with the Fiat 500 in the sense that it's not built in Italy but in Tychy, Poland and Toluca, Mexico?

And since we're on the topic of Fiat 500 ads, the Italian company just released nother commercial with Jeniffer Lopez, this time for the limited production 500 by Gucci Edition, which you can watch with or without your palm facing your head in the video after the jump.

After seeing the lukewarm response to its U.S. market commercials on the 500C starring Jennifer Lopez (…or was that the other way around?), Fiat's marketing division put its act together and presented a more appropriate ad for its 2012 500 Abarth, which was unveiled today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new advertisement conveys the message that the 160-horsepower 500 Abarth is a naughty little Italian city car in a cheeky but tasteful way. The 1-minute long commercial concludes with the female voiceover, "The Fiat 500 Abarth. You'll never forget the first time you see one".

You can take a look at the clip for yourself in the video after break.

New 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth Hits U.S. Shores with 160HP 1.4L Turbo Engine [36 Photos]

After the U.S. launch of the regular Fiat 500 and the canvas-top 500C, it's time for the Italian automaker to introduce the sportier version of its retro-styled mini, the new 2012 500 Abarth that makes its debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The good news is that Fiat opted to offer the 500 Abarth with a more powerful engine than the standard 135-horsepower four-banger that's available on the basic European model.

In the States, the hot 500 gets a turbocharged, twin intercooled and MultiAir-equipped 1.4-liter engine that produces a more robust 160-horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 170 lb-ft (230Nm) of peak torque between 2,500 and 4,000 rpm.

Should Chrysler LLC be Troubled with Fiat 500's Sales in the USA?

CATEGORY: , , , | Minggu, 06 November 2011

When the Fiat Group – Chrysler LLC alliance first announced plans to bring the Fiat 500 to the U.S. market, it had hoped to sell around 50,000 cars in the first year –a highly optimistic number given that the BMW Group sold 47,050 MINIs of which 22,922 were hardtop hatchbacks in the U.S. through October this year.

In the same period, Fiat delivered 15,826 examples of its retro styled city car. A recent article on CNN's Fortune magazine states that while "it may be too early to call the 500 a flop, a lackluster start has cast a shadow over CEO Sergio Marchionne's grand plans to expand in the U.S."

But if you take a closer look at what the two brands currently have to offer in the States, it's somewhat unfair to compare the 500s first year of sales with the entire MINI portfolio.

The Fiat Group may be constantly delaying Alfa Romeo's return to the U.S. market but at least it's keeping its word with the 500 range.
